Comparing Doctoral Training in Europe and North America

Workshop, 9./10. November 2006 in Frankfurt am Main

The German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and UNESCO-CEPES, the European institute for higher education of UNESCO, organised an international workshop at the Frankfurt University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany from 9 to 10 November 2006.

During the meeting 30 prominent international experts presented and discussed recent issues related to the general topic of the workshop „Form Follows Function – Comparing Doctoral Training in Europe and North America“. The programme was structured into the following sessions:

Panel debate: What kind of graduates do we need?
I. Universities and Inter-Sectoral Co-operation of Doctoral Schools
II. Doctoral Schools: an Overview on Advanced Models and their Organisation and Positioning in Universities
III. Selection Procedures and Admission to Doctorate: Social and Legal Aspects of Doctoral Training
IV. Curriculum Design, Learning Outcomes and Key Competences
V. Quality Assurance in Doctoral Education with a Special Look at Professional Doctorates: New Developments
VI. New Forms of International Cooperation in Doctoral Training

The programme, a list of participants and the presentations are presented here as downloads.
On the basis of these presentations UNESCO-CEPES will issue a separate volume in early 2007.
